‘The Office’ will end with Season 9

The Office

About damn time, really. Here’s some spoilers for the last season. So the last season of The Office was pretty much the worst the once-great show has ever seen, with many of the series’s leads leaving for greener pastures. A lot of speculation arose that NBC would be putting the show out to pasture, especially with the imminent debut of The Farm, the Dwight Schrute-centered spinoff, and now confirmation has come down the wire that the upcoming Season 9 will be the show’s last.

TVLine has a conversation with Greg Daniels, the show’s creator, who is returning to serve as showrunner for the final season. Daniels doesn’t seem too happy about how the show has tanked since he left, and he wants to bring it back to prominence just in time to see it gone forever.

Andy Bernard is still in charge, according to Daniels, but he’s been sent off to Outward Bound leadership training over the summer and comes back brimming with confidence. The refocusing of the show around Andy has been one of the biggest flops of the last few seasons – a character who was funny in small doses just got more and more grating as they tried to expand on his personality. It remains to be seen whether another season will make him interesting, especially considering that the show is also keeping on odious new character Nellie for the final season.

One of the more interesting announcements about the show is the introduction of two new characters, played by Clark Duke and Jake Lacy, who are brought in to take care of the insane backlog of customer complaints left by Kelly Kapoor (as Mindy Kaling has moved on to her own show on Fox). This is at least a new angle on the business besides “hey, let’s sell a lot of paper,” and those two guys are pretty funny.

What do you think? Will you be watching as The Office closes down forever?
