Unfollowing somebody on any social network is a pain in the ass. Go on, try it now, unfriend somebody, anybody. It can be your parents or some ass you met at a party five years ago and haven’t spoken to since. They do not want you to reduce your social network. So much so that social networking companies torpedo apps that let you do so.
Nonetheless, Unfollowing is an app whose time has come. It’s pretty simple: file a request to have everybody you follow on Twitter taken off your feed, and it does so. From there you can refollow only the people you want on Twitter: unlike Facebook Twitter doesn’t require this whole awkward “so-and-so wants to be your friend again!” dance.
Again, it’s not hard to see why Twitter shut down this app for violating their terms of service, but frankly, we need the wipe option. We meet people all the time, and following and friending has become an annoying social obligation. Even if you don’t care about these people at all, you follow out of a sense of duty.
Putting a stop to that can only be a good thing.
