Instant Analysis of the Tiger Woods Press Conference
Look, either you’re with Tiger, or you’re against him. You either thought that was as heartfelt and sincere of a statement you’ll ever see Tiger give, or you think he sounded stilted, rehearsed, and robotic. We’re clearly of the former opinion.
Tiger wrote the speech himself and besides all the much-needed contrition, the two statements that stand out the most to us are the ones we put in bold during the live blog: “I was unfaithful. I had affairs. I cheated.” And, “I do hope to return to golf one day, but I don’t know when that will be. It may be this year.” Both lines speak volumes.
Of the first line, I’ve got to admit it was sort of cathartic to see Tiger actually say these words out loud. I think the world needed to see him say that, and not just read it in his previous publicist-approved statements.
On the second line, there’s no chance he’s playing Augusta; and I’m guessing he won’t want to face the British press for the Open. Might Pebble Beach be his Major comeback?
He definitely had some strong language elsewhere in the statement, particularly directed at the media, insisting that Elin never hit him, that she deserves nothing but praise, and that the paparazzi should stay the hell away from his mom, wife, and kids. He also essentially told Fox News’s Brit Hume to go f*ck himself over his convert from Buddhism to Christianity comment, as well as denied that he’s ever taken performance-enhancing drugs.
Tiger heads back to rehab now, and we wish nothing but the best for him. We’re still incredulous that he and Elin will ultimately work things out, but it sounds like they’re trying. Once that part of his life is sorted out, we hope to see Tiger back on the golf course real soon.
What do you guys think? “
