Actress and NFL Royalty Rooney Mara Lands Coveted ‘Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ Lead Role

by 8 years ago

A couple months ago, we told you about the biggest ongoing casting war in Hollywood: the fight over the coveted lead actress spot in the American adaptation of the “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” trilogy. Among the contenders back in June: Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway, Carey Mulligan, Ellen Page, Kristen Stewart, Mia Wasikowska, and Olivia Thirlby. We had heard that Mulligan had the role locked up, but today director David Fincher and producer Scott Rudin announced that Rooney Mara had been cast. Wait, who?

Rooney isn't the principal of a Chicago suburbs high school; she's a 25-year-old Westchester County native who has starred in “Dare,” “Friends (with Benefits),” “Youth in Revolt,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” and the forthcoming “The Social Network” (which Fincher directed and Rudin produced). She's also the sister of Kat Mara, who played E's assistant on “Entourage” last season, as well as the great granddaughter of New York Giants football team founder Timothy Mara and Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney.

Rooney's co-star is James Bond himself, Daniel Craig. Check out more photos and a couple of videos of Rooney Mara after the jump.
