The Daily Show’ Explains the Insanity of Today’s Special Election in Massachusetts

by 10 years ago

If you haven’t been following politics lately — or don’t live within 100 miles of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, you might be unaware that the biggest election of the year is taking place right now, today, as we speak. It’s a special election for the late Sen. Ted Kennedy’s seat between the Bay State’s Attorney General Martha Coakley, a Democrat, and State Senator Scott Brown, a Republic. The implications are enormous, especially since most polls have shown Brown with a slight lead going into the election today. If Brown wins, the Democrats lose their 60-member “supermajority” in the U.S. Senate, which means final passage of the Health Care bill will become incredibly difficult, if not impossible. If health care fails, so says some pundits, then Obama’s presidency is more or less over. No wonder the President showed up at a rally for Coakley on Sunday.

I won’t get into the politics of this thing except to share the opener of last night’s “Daily Show,” which finally weighed in on the race by pointing out the insanity of what’s happening: namely how the Democrats (and their candidate) screwed up so much that they might manage to lose a seat they’ve held for nearly five decades, and how the Republicans have become so reliant on the filibuster that even an 18-seat majority is not enough to get legislation passed. The hilarious clip is after the jump…
