The Best Fan Chants in College Basketball

by 6 years ago

Note these are presented in no particular order:

Kansas — “Rock Chalk”
“Rock Chalk, Jayhawk, KU!”: This super-old chant supposedly started out as “Rah-Rah, Jayhawks, Go KU” but was garbled along the way into what we know today. It’s cool how they start out all creepy and slow and get wild.

Maryland — “…Hey! You Suck!”
This hype song is played in pretty much every arena in the world, but the Terps have mastered it, transforming it into one of the best “You Suck” chants around.

Duke — “Go to Hell Carolina, Go to Hell”
One of the greatest rivalries in sports has developed a great chant — and you know it's pure hatred since the Crazies will unleash it at the end of games against opponents other than Carolina, not to mention outside on the quad following victories.

Utah State/Ohio University — “Winning Team, Losing Team”
It is going to seriously piss some people off seeing both of these schools share their beloved chant. Utah State is much better known for it than OU, but the Bobcats claim to have invented it and they do a pretty good version of it too. Either way, it’s an awesome chant and a great way to rub a lead in your opponent's face. Decide for yourself who does it the best.{pagebreak}

Georgetown — “Hoya Saxa”
The only chant on the list derived from an ancient language. But don’t think they’re brainiacs: the chant is basically nonsense. “Hoya” means “what” in Ancient Greek and “Saxa” means “rocks” so the chant is “What Rocks?” I don’t know what the hell that means and the Hoyas probably don’t either but it’s still a longstanding tradition at a school with a longstanding tradition of good basketball.

Florida — “The Chomp/Gator Bait”
They have Orange and Blue but the Swamp wouldn’t be complete without a good chomp or two. They use it in different variations including the Gator Bait chant. In my book, annoying gestures bump you up the list a few notches.

Florida State — “War Chant”
You have to give it up to the 'Noles for their War Chant and accompanying chop. It looks so fun that sometimes I have to join in when I see it on TV. And more importantly, it’s super obnoxious and annoying to rivals. One of the most classic chants ever.

Texas — “The Eyes of Texas”
While some fans have taken more generic hype songs and done them so well that they are now considered their own, Texas is among the few that has a cherished, state-specific tradition. Besides the middle finger, there isn’t a hand signal more recognizable in the NCAA than the Longhorn they put up during this entrance and victory song. I pick this over all other Texas chants.

Marshall — “We Are Marshall”
Perhaps the only chant with a movie named after it.{pagebreak}

UCLA — “Frisbee Cheer”
A spinoff of the “Winning Team, Losing Team” chant, UCLA’s take on a classic is pretty awesome. Extra points for complexity.

Kansas State — “Wabash Cannonball”
When you’re packed shoulder to shoulder in a stadium, there isn’t much you can do movement-wise. Kansas State’s Wabash Cannonball is probably the coolest demonstration of making use of that little bit of space. Saying that it just involves rocking back and forth doesn’t do it any justice. When you see it from a distance it looks really cool.

Taylor University — “Silent Night”
Taylor University in Indiana is definitely the smallest school on this list but they might have the most unique tradition around. Every year during the last Friday basketball game before fall semester finals, the tiny, packed gym stays perfectly quiet until their Trojans score 10 points. Even just by watching the video you can feel the energy surging as the ball is in the air and once the 10th point is scored, shit just erupt. And then they stay wild the entire time before joining in the singing of “Silent Night.” But the transition from complete silence to complete pandemonium is something to see.

Ole’ Miss — “Hotty Toddy”

Are you ready? Hell yes! Damn Right!
Hotty Toddy, Gosh almighty
Who in the hell are we – Hey
Flim Flam, Bim Bam
Ole Miss By Damn!

Those five lines are some of the most famous in sports chants. No one knows how old it is, but judging by the old timey words I’d say it’s pretty damn old. It’s much cooler to see traditions kept alive than to see new traditions manufactured.

Alabama — “Rammer Jammer”

We just beat the hell out of you!
Rammer Jammer
Give 'em Hell Alabama!

This one’s great for a few reasons. Not only is it a longstanding tradition, but it’s also specifically designed to rub it in the faces of teams they just stomped. That’s an all-around good chant. I love it.

Arkansas — “Woo Pig Sooie”
Now that’s how you get creative. Don’t just take “Let’s Go” or “We Are” and add your school’s name. This one’s been around for a long time and it’s not going anywhere. It’s also extremely annoying.
