J.Camm Goes Down Swinging at the Tanqueray Mix-Off Competition
Now, I can make a stiff drink with the best of them, but a mixologist I am not. When I drink, I generally stick to beer, but on those occasions that I drown myself in hard liquor, I usually go rocks or stick to classics like T&T. So going into this I knew trying to impress a f*cking gin expert was going to take some knowledge sharing. And by that I mean contacting my friend who is a mixologist and getting him to come up with a summer-inspired cocktail that put a twist on the classic T&T. The result of this was a very feminine and fruity drink that I proudly called the Gineral T, a name that was chosen to pay homage to my charity and maybe the car from “The Dukes of Hazard.”
Fast forward to the results of the competition. The Gineral went to battle and did his very best. He wowed Angus with his twists of strawberry, grapefruit, and lime, but when the competition ended, his best wasn't good enough. He lost to a drink by the name of Hot Stuff made by Tamsen Fadal. I couldn't f*ckin' believe it. Total devastation reigned over me for three to four solid minutes. But then, I was told that my charity would still receive a nice donation so I shook off the loss by chugging a few T&T's with the other gents from BroBible.
Before I give you the ingredients to my drink, which the ladies will no doubt enjoy, I should note that Tamsen Fadal took home the top prize which was $4,000 to the charity of her choice and Dorothy and I each brought home $1,000 for our respective organizations. The Ingredients and how to make the Gineral are below.
The Gineral T
2 oz. Tanqueray
0.5 oz. Fresh lime juice
0.25 oz. Fresh squeezed grapefruit juice
0.5 oz. Agave or Simple Syrup (if it is a 1:1 ratio of simple syrup, do 0.75 oz. to balance the acidity)
1 dash of each variety of bitters you have available (i.e. angostura)
Top with club soda
Here's how to build the drink:
In a mixing glass, first muddle the strawberry without the stem. Next squeeze the lime and grapefruit juices. Add agave or simple syrup. Add the bitters. Add Tanqueray. Add ice, shake hard for 10 seconds, and then strain into the serving glass over fresh ice. Serve in a Collins glass. Top glass with club soda. Garnish with long grapefruit peel and lime wheel in the drink and then a strawberry on the rim.
