For a little over a year now, the United States has been waging an air campaign against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

But bombs from above can only do so much, and it seems that after a year of little to no progress, the U.S. is starting to shift its strategy.

Last week brought the news of the first action U.S. troops took on the ground against ISIS (excluding a failed covert raid to free several American hostages last year).

The nighttime raid, despite losing one American troop, was tremendously successful, freeing 70 hostages and gleaning loads of information about the radical group.

Perhaps buoyed by that, today Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, speaking before the Senate Armed Forces Committee, promised more “direct action on the ground” as well as a continuation of air strikes.

“We won’t hold back from supporting capable partners in opportunistic attacks against ISIL, or conducting such missions directly whether by strikes from the air or direct action on the ground.”

Knock ’em dead, America.
