Michigan Teacher Jailed For Having Sex With Student After Driving Him To Her House And Giving Him Alcohol
Ex-Mount Clemens High School teacher Rachel Lauren Smith, 26, was sentenced earlier this month to serve 270 days in jail, register as a sex offender and to avoid contact with minors due to her involvement with a 17-year-old student at her former place of employment. Via Macomb Daily,
According to the Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office, Smith romanced one of her students, drove him to her house in Imlay Township, purchased and consumed alcohol with him and the two had sex on three separate occasions.
The Macomb County Sheriff’s Office initiated the investigation after authorities were alerted to rumors of a teacher engaging in sexual acts with a student in May. After interviewing the male student and determining the incidents took place in Lapeer County, investigators turned the case over to authorities there.
Mount Clemens Community Schools officials said Smith was placed on administrative leave while an internal investigation was conducted. While the probe was underway, Smith resigned.
Although Michigan law states that the age of consent is 16, state law still prohibits teachers from having sexual relationships with students.
Smith has since been placed on the sex offender registry, and after serving 90 days in jail she will be allowed to serve the remaining days through a work-release program. She was also ordered to pay a $600 fine and has been banned from using a computer, coming into contact with anyone under 16 years of age, cannot buy alcohol and cannot be within 500 feet of any place where people under the age of 17 are gathering, nor can she be employed in a position where she is a supervisor to anyone younger than 17.
