Is This The Most OutFuckinRageous Uber Surge Price You’ve Ever Seen?

Let me preface this by saying that I’m a HUGE BELIEVER in Uber. For the past 8 years I’ve been living in NYC and bore witness to the meteoric rise of Uber and the subsequent demise of the yellow cab industry. I believe in letting the free market operate, and Uber drivers have done more to improve the Taxi and Limousine business in the past 5 years than cabbies did in the past 50…I use Uber multiple times a week, and have generally had a really positive experience with the service…until last week.

Maybe I’m spoiled by how many Uber drivers there are in the Northeast. Maybe I’ve just been living in a glorious Uber bubble for the past few years, one in which the ‘Uber Surge’ never gets past 3x. Well, I’ve recently moved back to my ancestral lands of Florida, and in the past month of being back in the Sunshine State I’ve noticed some serious fuckery going on with the surge rates.

First up, every single night there’s an Uber surge after 10pm. It could be a Tuesday night and there’s still a 2.4x surge, presumably because they just don’t have enough drivers yet. However, I can’t help but think that Uber’s doing this just to squeeze dollars out of the people who need their service the most: drunk drivers….

Now for the epic surge I experienced on New Year’s Eve:
