SHIT: Your Porn Search History Could Be Made Publicly Available Online In The Next Big Privacy Hack

by 3 years ago

BDSM WAS JUST A PHASE BRO, I SWEAR!!!

Get your paranoia in check, Matt. You haven’t been exposed as a degenerate quite yet.

But rumors have been circulating around the webs that if you’ve been accessing dirty websites (ya, you), even in Incognito mode, you could be subject to public exposure in the next big privacy hack.

The warning is detailed comprehensively by blogger Brett Thomas, who informs us that our viewing history may very well be attached to our name if simple data breaches are achieved.

He writes,

If a malicious party obtained identifiable access logs for just one of the websites that know your name, and view logs for just one of the adult websites you’ve visited, it could infer with very high probability – beyond plausible deniability – a list of porn you’ve viewed. At any time, somebody could post a website that allows you to search anybody by email or facebook username and view their porn browsing history. All that’s needed are two nominal data breaches and an enterprising teenager that wants to create havoc.

Thomas also cites technical considerations that could be used to achieve the leak. These considerations include browser footprints (you give websites lots of information about your computer every time you visit), global identifiers (linking your browser footprint on one website to your footprint on another website), user tracking (almost every traditional website that you visit saves enough data to link your user account to your browser fingerprint, either directly or via third parties), and the ubiquity of hacking (paraphrasing an FBI director, Thomas writes, “There are two types of companies…those that know they’ve been hacked…and those that don’t know they’ve been hacked.”)

This is especially alarming for me considering I just blew through the entire season of ‘Mr. Robot’ this weekend. If you haven’t seen it, you should. It’s a psychological thriller about a vigilante hacker who is capable of seamlessly accessing, thus controlling, the lives of friends and co-workers through hacking their online footprints.

Now I’m officially having a panic attack.
