At 28-year-old Christine Carter’s heaviest, she weighed 275 pounds with her height only at 5’5”. Explaining how she allowed her weight to balloon to that point, Christine tells to Daily Mail that she had “triggers” for her weight gain – at first she smoked cigarettes, but upon quitting those she simply transferred her addiction from nicotine to eating. However, bad habits were not the only thing helping Christine gain weight:

‘The other factor is that I was in an unhappy relationship.

‘My ex was very controlling, told me what to wear and I believe he wanted me to be fat so that I wouldn’t leave him. He also didn’t like me having me own friends.

‘Being overweight, I didn’t feel I deserved anything better – I went from a place of being “fat and happy” to just “fat”.

‘It was taking a major toll on my body and instead of dealing with my feelings I was eating them.’

Food constantly on her mind, Christine says that she’d spend her days binge-eating sugar and unhealthy carbs. “I would wake up and eat all day long” she explains, “…sometimes I would eat in the middle of the night.”

Realizing that her body was in dire need of change, Christine tried a slew of popular diets that ultimately failed. Her last resort? A Vertical Gastric Sleeve surgery. Surgeons reportedly removed 70% of her stomach, which led to a 50 pound weight loss in August 2014.

Then, like many weight loss patients, Christine began to gain the weight back:

She said: ‘I started gaining the weight back, like many weight loss surgery patients do.

‘The weight loss surgery is only a tool. I had a wake-up call when I realised I was going to be a weight-loss surgery failure.

Rather than slip and fall hard into previous bad habits, Christine hired a coach and mentor who helped her work on her fitness and diet. Then a few months later, she got breast implants and a needed tummy tuck to fix up what being overweight had done to her body. What she didn’t need though, was a discouraging boyfriend:

‘I am not the same girl I once was. It ended my relationship – my ex became very insecure and jealous and I gained the confidence to see that I was not in a healthy relationship and needed to get out.

‘It also helped me progress in my career. Opportunities present themselves to me daily that I would not have if I was overweight.

‘You see, I don’t think it was the weight loss that changed me, but the weight gain.

‘As the pounds came off, I slowly but surely uncovered the confident, dedicated, hardworking woman that was there all along but that was too shy and afraid to be exposed.

‘When I see old photos of myself, I literally don’t recognise them.(via)

Christine now says that she’s “happier now than I have ever been in my entire life” and that while working out isn’t her “favorite thing in the world to do,” she sticks with it no matter what. “By committing even this one tiny thing, it begins to build confidence” she explains, “…trust in yourself that you can and you will do what you say you are going to do.”

Judging from her photos, it looks like Christine did exactly what she said she would do, and then some:
