The Yankees enter this Sunday evening tilt facing elimination. They are also facing Lance McCullers on the mound. It is a formula that, in theory, should play well for the men in pinstripes.

Let’s get through the obvious: the Yankees forgot to pack their bats for the postseason.

Aaron Boone has shuffle his lineup in what feels like every game of the playoffs. Not a single combination has “worked” as the team is hitting a putrid .161 (40-for-248) since the regular season ended. That is either the worst timed cold streak in recent memory or a sign of things to come.

We are betting on the former.

Harrison Bader is the only Yankee hitting right now, he is 7-for-25 in the postseason. Conversely, and shockingly, Aaron Judge continues to forget how to swing the bat. He has one hit in the ALCS and got boo’d yesterday. The team has also been held to six or fewer hits in their last 10 postseason games.

The lineup today is yet another shuffle. Rizzo, Judge, Stanton, Torres, Carpenter, Bader, Donaldson, Cabrera, Trevino are set to take the field. McCullers has all but abandoned a true fastball and so the righties on the team will need to stay balanced and see a 93mph sinker and then deal with an 85 mph slider that he mixes at nearly the exact same rate. The lefties have to be aware of his curve — a pitch he has only thrown to a right handed batter three times all season, but 186 times to lefties.

Here is where the worm turns.

Nester Cortes has been the best Yankee pitcher this season. He was the most consistent and has been a stopper. The Yankees are also simply better at home. The team was a .704 winner at home in the regular season (versus .519 on the road). It has also scored more at home then on the road — 5.2 rpg vs 4.8 — AND it allows fewer runs per game at home — 3.3 rpg vs 3.7.

Prior to the 6-0 loss yesterday, the two teams were separated by 8 total runs on the season. This is a close contest and has been.

Now facing elimination and with their backs against the wall — and with its best pitcher on the mound — things are bound to find their normalcy.

The normalcy here is that the Yankees won’t get swept. The team may not come back to win the pennant, but we aren’t betting on futures we are betting for today.

Today the Yankees defend the home field and get a victory with its best pitcher on the mound.

Take the Yankees at home to get $200 back (plus your winnings) when they win!
