Netherlands, in most past World Cup matches, would have been a heavy favorite against an American squad. This time, not so much. The moneyline opened at -125 on the Dutch. It had tremendous value on a draw (+245) and even more so on Team USA (+380). As an underdog, this is about as winnable a match as the USMNT could have asked for. The team would have been the faves against Australia, Senegal or Poland.
The Dutch advanced out of Group A without much of a challenge – as expected. That means all of the questions entering play still exist for this squad. The Netherlands did not qualify for the last World Cup and it was placed in Pod 2 instead of its typical 1 slot. When it drew the host country, Qatar, as its Pod 1 team, it assured the team would breeze through. Which it did.
Netherlands has some bankable talent. Virgil van Dijk could be the best center-back in the world. Youngster Matthijs de Ligt has shown promise and all of Memphis Depay, Cody Gakpo, and Steven Bergwijn are all very good forwards. Gapko has been playing tremendously well so far and will have to be contained, if you want a player to watch from that squad.
Beyond that, there is a lot of questions about depth and talent. That depth was not tested in Group play — and the results were not great during qualifying tournaments. The talent is not what we have seen from previous Netherland teams, either.
Team USA has incredible focus and the defense has shined.
