A Brief History Of NBA Players And Sex Scandals
You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to know that athletes and sex go together about as well as peanut butter and jelly, with some of our favorite players capable of banging out pretty much anyone they want to with a simple mention about what their profession is.
For years, there have been rumors, truths, myths and legends, so we here at BroBible want to give you a brief history of some of the biggest sex scandals that NBA players have been involved in over the past 25 years—which, in some cases, helped define their careers.
1990: James Worthy’s Undercover Bust
Before there was this whole Lamar Odom mess, there was James Worthy, who, in 1990, was just about to go two-on-one with two call girls at the same time—every bros dream, right?
It’s too bad that the future Hall of Famer got nailed himself, as the prostitution ring was busted when the girls turned out being undercover cops, causing Worthy to miss the tip of that night’s game against the Houston Rockets—all for trying to stick his tip in a couple ‘stutes.
1991: Magic Johnson And The HIV He Attained
One of the biggest and most popular athletes on the planet during the time, when, in 1991, then L.A. Lakers star Magic Johnson announced that he was forced to retire from basketball because of HIV, it sent shockwaves through sports and entertainment.
Johnson, who was still 32 years old at the time, said that his contraction of the AIDS virus was due to the extravagant lifestyle he lived off the hardwood, meaning, yes, he had sex with lots of people.
More than a sex scandal, per se, Magic’s shocking proclamation brought a whole new meaning to what AIDS/HIV was for everyone, not just athletes.
2001: The New York Knicks, Dikembe Mutombo And The Gold Club
With 41 road games during a regular season and an abundance of money at their disposal, of course NBA players are going to get a little lonely while traveling for six months.
Rather than just sit around their hotel room, though, when teams traveled to Atlanta, The Gold Club was the place to be, as it welcomed ballers through the doors with open arms—and lots of boobs.
The hope was that, by getting athletes into the place, it would become the most desired spot—which, oddly enough, worked.
Prominent players like Larry Johnson, John Starks and Patrick Ewing of the New York Knicks frequented the spot, as did Dikembe Mutombo—who didn’t seem to reject any of the ladies with his go-to finger wag.
2004: Kobe Bryant Almost Let’s His Black Mamba Ruin His NBA Career
Arrested during the summer of 2003 after a woman filed a sexual assault complaint in Colorado against him, L.A. Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant nearly had his entire Hall of Fame career wiped out with one slip up.
Easily the biggest story in the NBA during the 2004 season, Kobe was back-and-forth between L.A. and Colorado for court appearances and numerous testimonies after a 19-year-old hotel staffer accused him of having sex with her without consent, leading to Bryant saying these words in his apology—as his wife Vanessa sat by his side:
“Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did. After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter.”
The case may have been dismissed because the alleged victim refused to testify, but whoever wrote those words for Kobe sure make it sound like he was all but admitting he should be in prison.
2010: Delonte West Went South On Teammate LeBron James’ Mom, Gloria
To this day, it’s something NBA fans can’t help but wonder—did LeBron James’ teammate, Delonte West, really bang James’ mom, Gloria? Seeing as how LBJ played like this during the final days in a Cavs uniform after the rumor got hot and then bolted for the Miami Heat a month later, one would believe this to be true.
Who really knows if it is or what parts might actually be, but former NBA player Calvin Murphy has gone on record as to saying that it “absolutely” happened, so take that for what it’s worth.
One thing is for sure, true or not, the entire background to this thing and how shit unfolded could only have been scripted in Cleveland sports lore.
2010: Tony Parker Cheats On Eva Longoria… With Teammate Brent Barry’s Wife, Erin
It seems that 2010 was the year of players fucking over their teammates with instances of them getting involved with their families, because, in addition to the aforementioned one, San Antonio Spurs players Tony Parker and Brent Barry found themselves embattled in a full-fledged sex scandal.
Parker, who was married to mega-hottie Eva Longoria at the time, decided that scooping up Barry’s wife Erin would be an added plus to his likely Hall of Fame resume, dipping his French stick into the lady to ruin not just one, but two marriages.
Oh, and how would something like this get uncovered? Through un-deleted text messages, of course! What, are we in fucking middle school and forgot to clean up our digital mess? SMH.
2014: Paul George Offers Cash For A Stripper To Keep Quiet
Indiana Pacers forward Paul George had a breakout 2013-14 season by making his second career All-Star Game, but it was what happened with a stripper during that season that nearly fucked up his entire life, bros.
George, who is/was dating the daughter of L.A. Clippers head coach Doc Rivers, allegedly tried paying a cool $1 million to a lady named Daniela—who made a name for herself as a stripper/model down in Miami and messed around with a few other high-profile entertainers, most-notably, rapper Lil Wayne—after it was discovered that George had knocked her up.
Hoping that Daniela didn’t keep the baby, the Pacers’ star tried slipping her the ol’ cash for quiet maneuver, which she went against and gave birth to a girl.
According to some rumors, George and the stripper actually go back as far as 2013 when they were spotted at a party together, so, yeah, if you stick the pipe in the hole enough times, something’s bound to happen.
2015: Matt Barnes And Former Teammate Derek Fisher Throw Down Over Gloria Govan
The most recent sex scandal in the NBA right now, when news broke that current Memphis Grizzlies forward Matt Barnes drove 90-plus miles to his estranged wife’s house to beat the shit out of former teammate and current Knicks head coach Derek Fisher, sports fans were, once again, amused.
Fisher, who swooped in to rebound Gloria Govan away from Barnes, has been romantically involved with the sexy Govan, so OF COURSE Barnes was going to take issue with him popping shots all over his ex.
Details still continue to surface on this one, but, at the very least, we have that hilarious moment when a stadium full of opposing fans mock Barnes while he’s attempting free-throws—and that will never get old.
