The 2020 college football season is technically over a week old now, but this week the ACC kicks things off and we actually have a full slate of games on Saturday. This means that it’s time to start our season-long series of picking our lock of the week.
Last season we managed to go 5-3-1, not bad, not great, but a winning record nonetheless. We’ll look to improve on that this season and get off to an ideal start as we get things going this week.
College Football Lock Of The Week: Charlotte @ Appalachian State (-16.5)
Kick-Off: Sat. Sept. 12, 12:00 PM EST, ESPN 2
The Pick: App State -16.5
This is low-key one of the better Group of 5 rivalries in college football and last year’s meeting between these two sides lived up to that hype. Appalachian State was able to knock off the 49ers 56-41 in a thrilling contest; here’s to hoping this year’s game is as exciting as last season’s.
Charlotte finished 7-6 a year ago while App State fell just once, to Georgia Southern, en route to a 13-1 season. The Mountaineers are looking to build off of an impressive campaign a year ago hoping for a New Year’s Six Bowl while the 49ers are looking to take another step forward.
For App State, the gameplan is pretty simple: contain quarterback Chris Reynolds. The ‘Neers didn’t do too great a job of that last season as he threw for 296 yards and four scores, but App State did lead the Sun Belt in total defense a season ago and should be up to the task this season.
On the offensive side of the ball for App State, the Mountaineers are simply deeper than the 49ers, especially at the skill position which should allow them to avoid any sort of super slow start out of the gates. Senior quarterback Zac Thomas enters a new season with plenty of experience throwing for 49 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions over the last two seasons.
The fact that App State underwent a coaching change this offseason may scare a few folks away from the rather sizable spread here, but Shawn Clark is a familiar face to these players as he was promoted to the head coaching spot after being an assistant for a few seasons.
App State will be looking to make a statement on Saturday on its home turf and I believe the ‘Neers will accomplish just that.
