Colorado State head coach Jim Mora decided to make a change at defensive coordinator in the middle of the college football game against Oregon State. Tyson Summers was fired (or quit) at (or right before) halftime.
It actually sounds like Mora was forced to make a change because Summers just… left the game. The old “you can’t fire me, I quit” situation. Something like that. Co-defensive coordinator Kenny McClendon took over the play-calling duties.
The Rams ultimately lost the college football game in blowout fashion but larger questions loom. The official account of what happened has not yet leaked. However, there are always two sides to every story. The truth usually falls somewhere in the middle.
Jim Mora was irate.
Colorado State lost by 30. It was ugly. Especially on defense. The offense was not as big of an issue.
Oregon State finished with 56 points, 650 (!!) total yards and 34 first downs in 70 total plays over 32 minutes and six seconds of possession. It converted seven of eight third downs and one fourth down, allowed only one sack and committed only one turnover. That’s all great but get this—
The Beavers never punted. Not even once!
The Rams scored 26 points with their backup quarterback. They racked up 366 yards of offense and punted only three times. None of it mattered. Their defense was horrendous so they never stood a chance.
Jim Mora lost his mind after a blunder during the first half. It appears as though the head coach said “How the f— does that happen!! It is the second week in a row!!”
Any idea what Jim Mora is saying here? I can’t quite make it out. https://t.co/hFZwJAPp9N

His anger did not subside. Colorado State trailed 35-14 at halftime.
Defensive coordinator Tyson Summers was relieved of his duties.
Rams co-defensive coordinator Tyson Summers began the game on the sideline as the primary defensive play-caller. He was no longer on the sideline later in the first half and Cornerbacks coach Trent Mathews was signaling defensive plays. The other co-defensive coordinator, Kenny McClendon, was holding a play sheet. Where did Summers go?
Mora was asked about the elephant in the room during his postgame press conference. It is unclear as to who decided what but it sounds like Summers might’ve left on his own accord.
“Tyson was relieved of his play-calling duties. He left the field and is no longer with this program.”
Make of that what you will. Colorado State’s defensive coordinator was fired or quit during the loss to Oregon State. Sounds to me like the latter. I’m sure it’s a little bit of both.
