Did Philip Humber Get Help From the Umpire on Last Out of Perfect Game?

by 7 years ago

Humber threw a 3-2 breaking ball to Seattle's Brendan Ryan, who looked like he checked his swing. Home plate umpire Brian Runge immediately called strike three, and instead of running to first base, Ryan threw his helmet down to argue the call. If he’d run to first, perfection wouldn’t have been achieved.

At first blush, I, as well as many others, thought it was a case of an umpire getting caught up in the moment and erring in favor of the pitcher. Hey, after the whole Armando Galarraga incident, who could blame Runge? After seeing this slow-motion replay of the swing, however, it looks like he got it correct.

What do you think?
