Believe it or not, we’ve already reached the final regular-season event on the PGA Tour schedule as the focus turns to the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, NC. There shouldn’t be too big of a major championship hangover this week fresh off of a dramatic PGA Championship as a strong field is set to tee it up at Sedgefield Country Club.
J.T. Poston will be defending his title this week after winning last year’s event by a shot at 22-under. Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed, Webb Simpson, Tommy Fleetwood, and Justin Rose headline the field as players look to improve their rankings in the FedEx Cup standings.
The Par 70 Sedgefield CC features Bermudagrass greens and fairways that will play just over 7,100 yards this week. This track is a scorer’s paradise and with it being on the shorter side, it’s not just the bombers that we’ll see jump to the top of the leaderboard.
As it is at every ‘short’ course on Tour, iron play will be a premium this week so pay attention to strokes gained: approach. Par 4 efficiency, a stat that isn’t talked about too often, is another to key in on heading into the week, particularly on Par 4’s between 400-450 yards as there are seven on the scorecard this week.
Pick To Win
The University of Georgia product has been solid this season with 11 Top 25 finishes in 16 starts, including four straight finishes T-19 or better. He’s never missed the cut in six starts at Sedgefield and ranks 36th on Tour in strokes gained: approach. The putter has also cooperated very well this season as he ranks 14th in strokes gained: putting.
The iron-play is there, the putter is certainly there and he’s trending toward earning career win No. 3 on the PGA Tour.
Pick To Contend (Top 10 Finish)
There’s a lot to like when it comes to Casey heading into this week. He finished T-2 at the PGA Championship and has three straight Top 18 finishes at Sedgefield. Looking at the numbers, he’s third on Tour in strokes gained: approach and seventh when it comes to Par 4 efficiency (400-450 yards).
The Englishman is certainly trending in the right direction heading into the final weeks of the season.
Pick To Fade
Kisner enters the week after back-to-back Top 25 finishes including a T-19 at the PGA Championship. He also has success at this event in the past with two Top 10’s and it’s no secret that he prefers Bermudagreens over others, but the ball-striking simply hasn’t been there on a consistent level.
Enters the event 111th on Tour in strokes gained: approach and 179th in greens in regulation percentage.
