- Even though you’re working from home, you should mentally prepare to be ready to work. Don’t just roll out of bed and flip open the laptop 30 seconds before you’re supposed to start work. You should give yourself plenty of time to wake up, take a shower to feel fresh and clean, eat a hearty breakfast, make time for your early morning exercise routine, and be ready to take on the world.
- Outline your day and schedule your tasks first thing in the morning either mentally or write it down so that you know what you need to get done and you can prioritize the day’s workload. Make time management a priority and have a well-organized to-do list for each day to minimize surprises.
- Utilize real-time messaging programs as your way to communicate with your coworkers so that you can stay abreast of the latest news from your company and exchange ideas. Today’s collaboration tools allow you to easily and seamlessly share critical content with your coworkers in seconds. Constant and quick communication with coworkers is key when working remotely so that nobody, including your boss, is waiting for you to respond to an important work email.
- Have a dedicated workspace. Don’t work from the couch because that is the same place that you binge-watch TV. You associate the couch with leisure and not work which may affect your motivation. Have a desk, preferably in a room with a door to close off potential distractions, but personalize the room to make yourself comfortable. If you feel like you’re at work there is a better chance that you will perform like you are at work.
- One of the most important accessories you’ll need is a comfortable office chair that keeps you at a good posture and also comfy. This is a tax write-off so don’t skimp on a cheap chair that will kill your back after sitting in it for three hours. Look for an office chair with comfortable cushions, lumbar support, armrests, and wheels.
- You need to be disciplined when working from home. Minimize distractions such as turning on TV in the middle of the workday. You are your worst enemy when it comes to staying productive while working from home and that means not succumbing to any temptations.
- Logout or block social media if it becomes too much of a distraction. If you keep checking Instagram for spicy memes during the workday then maybe you need to take away that distraction so you can focus on work. You may also have to turn off or hide your phone if it is stopping you from being the best remote worker that you can be.
- Even though you’re working from home, don’t have friends or family interrupt your workday that may sidetrack your focus. Close the door from your personal office so that your spouse or children won’t disrupt your workday.
- Avoid the kitchen if it isn’t lunch. It’s so easy to be bored at work and that boredom gets translated as hunger. Next thing you know is that you’re making French toast sticks and curly fries in the oven.
- If you encounter a mental rut, clear your mind with a five-minute walk outside. Fresh air will do wonders for your brain and your creativity.
- If you are distracted at your home office because of your family or roommate then try to work from a coffee shop, the library, the park or anywhere else that has a solid internet connection. Just don’t let your new surroundings become an excuse to people-watch for the entire afternoon.
- Don’t take advantage of your work from home situation and schedule your non-work appointments like a trip to the dentist when you would typically be working. Try to schedule these appointments during your lunch or after work. Respect the flexibility of your remote job and utilize your freedom when you need to but don’t overdo it.
- Listen to music that not only motivates you but also doesn’t distract you from your tasks at hand. Different music might be helpful for different tasks. When you really need to concentrate you may want to have chill EDM music, but when you’re powering through emails maybe you want hip-hop or rap.
