Over the weekend, Academy Award winning actress Diane Keaton passed away. The star of films such as The Godfather trilogy, Annie Hall, and Something’s Gotta Give was 79 years old.

One of Diane Keaton’s most iconic roles was playing Kay Adams in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather trilogy, having starred in all three films from 1972 to 1990.

It was on the set of The Godfather that Keaton met fellow Hollywood icon Al Pacino, as her character Kay Adams was the wife of his character, Michael Corleone.

After filming The Godfather, the pair began dating and carried on an on-again-off-again relationship through the release of The Godfather: Part III in 1990.

Source close to Al Pacino says the legendary actor regrets not getting married to Diane Keaton, who was the “love of his life”

According to a source who spoke to the Daily Mail, Pacino will “forever regret he didn’t make his move when he had the chance.”

“For years after he and Diane split, Al used to say, ‘If it’s meant to be, it’s never too late for a do-over.’ But sadly, now it is,” the source added, saying that Pacino considers Keaton to be the “love of his life.”

Keaton herself was certainly also quite contrite about her feelings for Pacino over the years, saying of the Oscar-winner:

“We met in a bar. I was awkward. And Al? Al was as mysterious as the love I felt for him the moment I saw his face. There was nothing nice about my thoughts. His face, his nose, & what about those eyes? I kept trying to figure out what I could do to make them mine. They never were.”

Our thoughts are with Keaton’s friends, family, fans and various loved ones during this difficult time. May she rest in peace.
