Actress Anya Taylor-Joy is going viral on social media for her answer to an insane The Today Show question about the similarities between music icon Joni Mitchell and video game cartoon character Princess Peach. Taylor-Joy voices Princess Peach in the Mario movies and is set to star as Mitchell in a biopic.
While appearing on The Today Show to promote The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which will be hitting movie theaters on March 1, Anya Taylor-Joy was asked by host Craig Melvin to identify a connection between Joni Mitchell and Princess Peach.
Anya Taylor-Joy is going viral for her bemused response to an insane question about the similarities between Princess Peach and Joni Mitchell
“You’re rumored to be playing Joni Mitchell, speaking of through-lines here, arguably one of the most singularly important women in music over the last generation or so. Princess Peach, one of the most iconic women in gaming history. What is the connection there?” he asked.
A bemused Taylor-Joy then repeated the question aloud to make sure she heard him correctly before answering: “That they’re both singular. You can’t touch them. They’re in a league of their own.”

That wasn’t the only bizarre line of questioning from Melvin, who also attempted to make a point about her characters often being “trapped.”
“In The Queen’s Gambit you’re trapped in chess, you’re trapped in the kingdom here in Mario, [and] you’re trapped sort of in Survival,” Melvin asked.
“So, I have a history of being trapped?” a clearly confused Taylor-Joy replied.
“I was going to ask you, is that a theme that you seek out or is that just coincidence?” Melvin followed up.
Taylor-Joy’s soundbite — particularly the response to the Joni/Peach question — reminded people of those parody Clickhole posts in which they’ll share fakes “unprompted” quotes from celebrities.
After seeing the clip of the interview where she said this, it’s funny to see that celebrities don’t say these types of things unprompted but instead because they keep getting asked insane questions and have to pull some answer out of their ass on the fly.
