Love can sometimes make people act in irrational ways. For one former University of Arizona student, it meant spending “thousands” of her parents’ money just to be in the same building as her athlete crush.
TikTok creator Maggie (@maggiereccoo) posted a video that got over 261,200 views, walking through what she calls a “literally insane” decision she made during her freshman year.
What Did She Do To Get Closer To Her Crush?
“We listen and we don’t judge,” she begins. “Arizona is playing in the Final Four right now, and it kind of made me reminisce on my time there.”
She explains she used to live close to the athletes’ facilities and practice field.
“I lived in the dorm, and it was like, the athlete dorm… literally right next to everything athletics,” she says.
That meant constant proximity to the athletes. “We would always walk by the facility… and we’d always see them go in,” she says.
Around that time, she started talking to someone. “This is my first guy I ever took serious in Arizona,” she says. “And he was also the first athlete I’ve ever talked to.”
That’s when her roommate introduced her to a club that could bring her closer to the athletes.
“She was telling me about this thing that’s in the facility called the Sands Club,“ she says. “The Sands Club is basically a membership you can buy to give you full access to the facility.”
She Convinced Her Parents To Pay For It
Even though the club wasn’t meant for students, she wanted in.
“The Sands Club is meant for, like, old people, donors, business people… not students,” she says.
She pitched it to her mom anyway. “I basically give her a whole spiel on how this is gonna help me to study… how this is gonna be so good for my business degree… literally telling her lies,” she admits.
Her parents agreed. “All I do know is that you had to buy it for a year… and it was like, in the thousands of dollars,” she says.
She Used It Every Day
Once she had access, she made good use of it.
“I went to the Sands Club every single day… every single day I would bring me and my friends,” she says. “You can go and eat with all the athletes… go in the stadium whenever you wanted.”
She even charged food to the account. “That’s really how I ate my whole freshman year,” she says.
But none of that was the reason she was there. “I really never got anything out of the club except for being able to run into the guy that I was in love with,” she says.
She says that while she saw her crush often, it didn’t lead to anything. “Spent thousands of dollars to just be in the same building as him, basically.
In the end, she ended up transferring, but the membership kept running.
“From May… my parents paid for the membership, and nobody used it,” she says.
She concludes by saying she’s not proud of her actions. “If you think you’re crazy over a man, I promise you… I have so many stories just like this,” she says.
“I could make 100 of these,” she added in the caption.
Viewers Applaud Her Efforts
In the comments, viewers were impressed by how far she went.
“You’re my type of crazy,” one person wrote.
Others felt like she at least made the most of it.
“Ok but you went every day and got your moneys worthhhhh,” another added.
“To have this kinda money lmao,” a third wrote.
How Much Does It Cost To Join The Sands Club?
According to the Sands Club website, memberships range from $39 to $145 per month, along with an initiation fee between $150 and $200.
All in, her parents likely ended up paying close to $2,000 for that first year.
On top of that, the membership covers the account holder, their spouse, and dependents under 26 living at home, and it also allows members to bring guests.
Just as Maggie described it, the club appears to be geared more toward professionals, with things like private meeting spaces, golf benefits, and other social perks.
@maggiereccoo i could make 100 of these #foryoupage #storytime #arizona
