Austin’s nightlife is woven into the city’s very fabric. There’s always a crowd somewhere, a show happening, or a bar packed with people who probably should have gone home an hour earlier.
However, as most partiers eventually learn, not every encounter is welcome. One Austin woman recently found herself dealing with a moment so baffling that she had to record a storytime for TikTok.
‘I Wasn’t Even Talking To Him’
TikTok creator Trinity (@trinity_hart) described a recent night at Hotel Vegas in Austin with her friends, where she crossed paths with a man who exhibited questionable behavior.
“Men in Austin are so bad,” she wrote in the text overlay.
She explains that she and her friend Kelly were standing by the bar when a man approached them. Kelly, who Trinity says “trolls people so hard,” was messing with him, trying to get him to buy them a drink.
Trinity, meanwhile, had no interest. “Most chopped,” she says. “Shortest guy I’ve seen in probably a month.”
While Kelly kept joking with him, Trinity says she stayed off to the side. “I wasn’t even talking to him,” she says.
That’s when things got strange.
“This man grabs my High Noon out of my hand and drinks from it. Eww,” she says. “Literally eww, guys.”
She says she froze for a moment before confronting him. “I look at him, and I go, ‘What the f— did you just do?’” His explanation, per Kennedy: “I wanted to.”
She says she told him he needed to buy her a replacement, and according to her, he refused.
“This man didn’t wanna buy me a new one after he… I wasn’t even talking to him,” she says. She added that even if he had been attractive, she still would never drink after a stranger. “Herpes is real. I don’t want that s—, OK?”
He then made the situation worse. “He literally cuts the top of the drink off and is, like, ‘Here. You can drink it now,’” she says. Trinity says she refused and went straight to the bartender, asking her to put the drink on his tab. “She does, and I love her for that,” she says.
She ends the story by describing the rest of her night, which included getting hit on repeatedly at another bar with her friends Nikki and Emma. Trinity says her new go-to move is to shake her head before a man even starts speaking. “It actually works really well to do that, ladies,” she concludes.
What To Do If You Get Unwanted Attention At Bars
Unwanted advances are common in nightlife settings, and it’s generally recommended to stick close to people you know when something feels off.
Setting boundaries early can deter further interaction, and if someone ignores those boundaries, staff members can intervene. Bartenders and bouncers are usually quick to help when a customer feels uncomfortable or unsafe.
Some Austin Women Say Local Dating Can Feel Like Dealing With ‘Peter Pan Syndrome’
In Reddit communities geared toward young people living in Austin, some users have shared their frustrations with dating in the city, arguing that many men seem uninterested in long-term commitment.
Medical News Today explains that some psychologists use the term “Peter Pan syndrome” to describe people who struggle with adult responsibilities and maintaining stable relationships.
According to the outlet, people with these traits may rely heavily on nostalgia for their youth and find it difficult to manage typical adult expectations. While this isn’t a formal diagnosis, some Austin women online say the description feels familiar when talking about the local dating scene.
Commenters Share Their Own Austin Nightlife Stories
“I just moved here not even a month ago, and I have already met some of the STRANGEST men in my life. The men here cannot be real,” one viewer wrote.
“Always the weirdest guys at hotel vegas,” another person said.
“Girl idk what to do anymore the men here are so wild and have the strangest behaviors,” someone else added.
And then there were the users focused on Trinity’s choice of venue. “Hotel Vegas on a Tuesday? U ok fam?” one person joked.
