Earlier this month, it was reported that a fourth film in The Mummy franchise was in the works with returning stars and Academy Award winners Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz set to return. According to Fraser, he’s been waiting for this call for “20 years.”
Brendan Fraser has been in the midst of a remarkable career renaissance in recent years, which was capped with an Academy Award for Best Actor for his work on The Whale back in 2022.
That career comeback has not only seen Fraser win an Oscar, return to mainstream Hollywood, and appear in a Martin Scorsese movie (Killers of the Flower Moon), but it’s also got him back leading the franchise that made him a massive star in the first place: The Mummy.
Brendan Fraser says that he’s been waiting “20 years” to make a fourth The Mummy movie and that it’s time to “give fans what they want”
During a recent interview to promote his new film Rental Family, Fraser said that he’s been waiting “20 years” to get the call to make a fourth The Mummy movie and is excited to deliver it for the fans.
“The third one was a model of… NBC had the rights to broadcast the Olympics that year,” Fraser said in an interview with the Associated Press.
“So they put two together and we went to China. Working in Shanghai, an incredible experience. I’m proud of the third one because I think it’s a good standalone movie. We picked up and did what we do with a different crew on deck and gave it our best shot. But the one I wanted to make is forthcoming. And I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want.”
Directed by Japenese filmmaker Hikari, who is best known stateside for helming the acclaimed Netflix series Beef, Rental Family sees Fraser star as an American actor who struggles to find purpose until he lands an unusual gig: working for a Japanese “rental family” agency, playing stand-in roles for strangers.
