It’s been more than 30 years since Pizza Hut rolled out a revolutionary new menu item when it unleashed Stuffed Crust Pizza on an unsuspecting world. The chain has tinkered with that formula over the decades with some fairly outrageous additions, and Canada has somehow beaten the United States to the punch with an innovation involving hot dogs.
Based on the cursory research I conducted while writing this, there has not been any serious research that has attempted to determine what percentage of people decline to eat the crust when they have a piece of pizza.
I personally can fathom the idea of letting some perfectly good carbs go to waste, but based on my pizza-eating experience, there is a tiny but not insignificant contingent of people who wave the white flag once they encounter dough that isn’t covered in cheese and sauce.
In 1995, Pizza Hut addressed that issue while giving gluttons extra incentive to place an order with the game-changer that was Stuffed Crust Pizza, which featured a healthy serving of mozzarella embedded in the crust.
The chain has repeatedly expanded its horizons since then while experimenting with different items that have been stuffed into its crust, and its outposts in Canada have somehow managed to outdo the United States with an offering that’s been resurrected for the start of baseball season.
Pizza Huts in Canada are selling pies with hot dogs stuffed into the crust
Pizza Hut operates close to 20,000 restaurants around the globe, and as is the case with many fast food chains, the items they offer tend to vary from country to country.
That’s the case for specific types of stuffed crust that have been offered in various regions at some point over the years, including a variation in Germany that boasted bacon and sausage, another in the Middle East that featured miniature cheeseburgers, and the divisive Marmite-infused twist that was temporarily available in New Zealand.
In 2012, Pizza Hut turned its attention to the hot dogs that popped up on pies that were served up in countries including South Korea, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom; one version featured a pizza encased in a ring of pigs in a blanket, while another had full hot dogs tucked into the crust.
The first of those options was sold for a limited time in the United States in 2015, but as far as I can tell, the second one has never popped up in America. Now, we’re being teased yet again, as it has returned in conjunction with the start of the Major League Baseball season…in Canada.

Hot dogs may be able to trace their history back to Germany, but I’d argue the United States has managed to co-opt the tubular meats that are inextricably linked to the sport known as “America’s Pastime.” However, Canada is somehow the country that has earned the right to chow down on hot dog stuffed crust pizza.
I thought there was a chance this was an April Fools’ prank, but it would have to be a pretty elaborate one when you consider there are a number of Canadians who’ve tried it for themselves.
Do better, America. Do better.
