Many subscribers are very unhappy that Netflix has raised its prices for the second time in a little over a year. Quite a few of them are even threatening to cancel the popular streaming service.

This week, Netflix revealed that it is increasing the prices for all subscription tiers. The streaming service claims it is doing so to “reinvest in quality entertainment.”

A Standard Netflix plan with no ads will now cost 150% more than it did in 2011

On the Netflix website, it just shows that the Standard plan will now be $8.99 a month, or one dollar higher than the previous price. The Standard ad-free plan, which includes simultaneous viewing on up to two devices, was raised from $17.99 to to $19.99 per month. The premium plan, which includes 4K/UHD streaming, is now up to $26.99 per month, or two dollars more than the previous price. Adding an extra member to a subscription will now cost $7 a month with ads, or $9.99 per month without them.

Also of note, all of the price increases apply to both existing and new Netflix subscribers. New members began paying the higher plan prices on March 26. Existing subscribers will see the new prices go into effect over the coming weeks, according to Netflix. They will receive an email about the new pricing based on the timing of each subscriber’s billing cycle.

“Our approach remains the same: We continue offering a range of prices and plans to meet a variety of needs, and as we deliver more value to our members, we are updating our prices to enable us to reinvest in quality entertainment and improve their experience by updating our prices,” Netflix said in a statement to Variety.

The last time Netflix raised its prices was in January 2025. The new price of a Standard ad-free plan will be a 150% increase over the $7.99 per month price in 2011. It will be the eighth price increase for that plan over that same time period.

Many Netflix subscribers, and at least one lawmaker, expressed their displeasure with another price increase

“Netflix just got a $2.8 BILLION payout from Paramount for its failed Warner Bros. deal,” Senator Elizabeth Warren wrote on X. “Then Netflix turned around and raised prices on millions of customers.”

Paramount recently paid Netflix $2.8 billion after Warner Bros. Discovery backed out of its agreement to sell to the streaming giant.

While Netflix had more than 325 million subscribers at the end of 2025, it now risks losing some portion of them due to the price increase. That being said, when Netflix was charging $7.99 per month in 2011, the company only had around 22 to 24 million subscribers.

It’s clear now,” one person wrote on X. “These price hikes aren’t about content, but about testing how much viewers will accept before leaving.”

This info reminded me to cancel today, thank you,” read another comment.

“I know this isn’t an original thought, but at this point it’s about time to go back to cable,” another Netflix customer pointed out. “They told us all the advantages of cutting the cord, and now just a few years later, they are becoming what they replaced.”

“The correct response is to cancel our subscriptions. How many people will actually do that?” someone else asked.

“Piracy has never been more back,” commented another X user.
