Florida Woman Gets Off Flight. Then She Sees What Happened To Her Carry-On Luggage: ‘Who Deprives Their Child From Using The Bathroom?’

Ever since airlines started charging for checked bags, flyers have crammed as much stuff as they can into their carry-on luggage.

One study found that carriers with checked bag fees have 27% more carry-on bags than those without checked bag fees. Not only that, but people are finding any way they can to bring as much stuff on board as possible. Some have purchased specially designed carry-ons that allow them to store as much as possible. Others have developed hacks like stuffing their possessions in their pillows or jackets.

This has made the cabin of an airplane a very cramped space. Every space that can have luggage, generally speaking, does. As a result, if someone spills something or has an accident, your bag could get caught in the crossfire.

Recently, a user on TikTok shared a travel horror story that will make you want to check your bag on all future flights. Why did she land to discover her bag was completely wet?

What Happened To This Woman’s Carry-On?

In a video with over 405,000 views, TikTok user Amber Berndt (@amberberndt) shows a backpack. The backpack appears damp.

“Just got off my flight and realized my bag was sitting in pee the whole time,” she writes in the overlay text. “URINE LITERAL URINE.”

Some commenters speculated that this occurred after she brought the bag to the bathroom.

“Y’all this happened ON THE PLANE!” she wrote in response in a comment. “I put it under the seat in front of me ON THE PLANE NOT THE BATHROOM FLOOR.”

In the caption, she adds that this is the second time that this has happened to her. The caption states that the flight was on Sun Country Airlines.

Is This Common?

It’s unclear how Berndt determined that the liquid covering her bag was urine. But if it was, just how frequently are planes getting soaked in pee?

A 2019 article in MEL Magazine by Quinn Myers investigated the claim that onboard urinations were common. After interviewing multiple flight attendants and pilots, Myers came to the conclusion that it’s rare for people to soil themselves on airplanes. While some interviewees said that they’ve seen it happen, they further stated that it was rare and that the main ones who did it were children.

Furthermore, if urine is reported on a plane, it’s not as though the cabin crew would simply let it be. One of the flight attendants interviewed by Myers stated that, if they were to find a seat soiled, they would have the area cleaned and the seat cushion replaced before the next flight.

If a person does wet themselves in the air, the punishments can be severe. In 2021, a passenger who behaved erratically, attacked cabin crew, and urinated in his seat was federally charged with interfering with a flight crew and attendants. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a possible $250,000 fine.

Flyers Insist They’ve Seen It

Even if confirmed instances of passengers soiling themselves are rare, many passengers claim that they’ve experienced the consequences of an incontinent flyer.

For example, one user on Reddit alleged that they spent their flight next to someone who urinated on themselves. Another internet user stated that they placed their neck pillow underneath the seat in front of them. When they removed it, they found it to be wet—thanks to the soiled children’s underwear that had been left on the flight.

There was also a case in which a woman believed her checked bag was covered in human excrement. A spokesperson later confirmed that it was actually grease from a broken pipe.

If one finds themself in this position, they should reach out to the airline immediately. That said, there’s no guaranteeing that the airline will actually compensate the flyer for the incident.

Commenters Are Disgusted

In the comments section, users were grossed out—but not exactly surprised.

“This happened to me! I heard the little girl in front of me asking to go to the bathroom and her parents ignored her the entire flight. Go to get my bag from under her seat and guess what,” wrote a user.

“This happened to my friend,” echoed another. “an elderly man in front of her had soaked the entire seat and her bag and its contents underneath 🙁 the airline was zero help.”

“And now I will forever be carrying a trash bag or a plastic bag instead of just a dust bag to put my bag in,” declared a third.
