A Costco customer found something unusual inside her protein powder container and wanted to know if it was normal or a sign something was wrong.
In a video that got over 2,548 views, TikTok creator Leslie Lorena (@leslieelorenaa) says she recently returned a container of Orgain Organic Protein powder, but the replacement didn’t help calm her worries.
What Was Wrong With The Protein Powder Packaging?
Lorena says she spent the day returning some products, and one of them was from Costco.
“It’s a food item, which I don’t like to return food,” she says. “But this cost me $35, so I wanted to return it.”
She grabs the container of Orgain’s chocolate-flavored plant protein powder.
“When I first opened it, it had these, like, punctures on it… Am I crazy?”
She opens the lid and shows the plastic seal, pointing to several small holes.
“So it’s these little punctures,” she says. “I was like, ‘Oh, there’s air in here. And that can, like, create mold.’”
She wasn’t sure if that was normal for plant-based protein.
“But because it’s plant protein, I don’t know if it needs air… I’m no expert at this stuff,” she says.
She returned the product and grabbed a new one, expecting it to be different.
Instead, she found the exact same thing. “I returned it, and I got a new one… and she told me that all these are punctured,” she says.
At that point, she started questioning whether she had just never noticed it before. “I just didn’t know if I was going crazy or what,” she says.
In the caption, she added, “Okay but I just wanted to make suuuure!!”
Commenters Share Their Theories
In the comments, viewers shared explanations and concerns.
“Some products require a vented cap. Is that possibly what you see?” one person asked.
Others were more alarmed.
“Excuse me, somebody could have tampered with it,” another said. “It could be poison, you would never eat something that had holes in the seal…”
“I unscrewed maybe 8 different ones before I bought it again, and they were all like that…” Lorena responded.
She added in another reply, “Very weird. I just don’t remember those being there before.”
“Just consume some steaks and call it a day,” a third joked.
Is The Packaging Normal?
Protein powder is usually stored in airtight containers because exposure to air can affect freshness and shelf life.
Additionally, when a product has a sealed inner layer under the lid, it’s usually meant to stay intact until the customer opens it, which helps with longevity and to confirm the product hasn’t been tampered with.
On top of that, in several unboxing videos of the Orgain protein powders, the seal appears fully intact with no visible holes when first opened.
The holes Lorena showed in her video look uniform and machine-made, which suggests they may have been made during manufacturing. However, it’s possible that this was an intentional error.
