A Nashville, Tenn., woman waited on her apartment balcony for her DoorDash to arrive. She watched as the DoorDash driver arrived at the complex but couldn’t believe the message he sent her.
TikToker Allison (@bostonmarketmacandcheese) says she can see the DoorDash driver at her apartment, according to the in-app map that lets customers see how close their food is.
“He’s downstairs,” she says. However, her food still hasn’t arrived. She found out why when she opened her messages.
Why Wouldn’t He Bring Her Food?
“He goes, ‘Only if you tip,'” she says. “I was like, ‘What? I already tipped.'” She claims that the DoorDash driver then asked her to leave him a good rating as well in exchange for her food.
“He won’t bring my food up,” she continues, laughing. The caption reads, “No cause his manipulation is working on me.”
She doesn’t share whether she gave into his request to get her food.
Viewers of the viral video couldn’t believe the driver’s audacity, sharing their reactions to his request.
“I’d tell him to keep it and call door dash lol,” one wrote.
“Holding the food hostage is wild,” a second said.
In a comment, Allison noted that this is the second issue she’s had with DoorDash recently.
“What’s even more wild is someone stole my food last weekend cause the driver left it outside in the open and they gave me $5 back,” she wrote.
The viral video reached 33,000 views.
Can DoorDash Drivers Ask For Extra Tips?
While DoorDash customers are asked to put in their tip amount prior to pick-up, some say drivers reach out to them through the app if they aren’t satisfied.
Drivers said wait times at restaurants or far deliveries warrant higher tips, especially if the original amount barely makes the order worth their time.
Customers on the r/doordash subreddit shared their experience with drivers pressuring them for more tips to complete an already accepted order. One showed screenshots of messages from a driver, who suggested that $9 for a 9.5-mile delivery wasn’t enough. The driver told the customer to cancel the order.
Commenters on the forum suggested how customers should handle conversations with drivers about additional tips.
“First off, don’t engage. Contact customer support. This is extortion,” one remarked.
“For reference, your dasher can unassign from your order for pretty much no penalty,” another suggested. “They want you to cancel because they still get half the pay for the order if you do it for them.”
According to a 2023 report by Business Insider, a DoorDash spokesperson notes that drivers that push for extra tips face “immediate deactivation.”
