‘Stranger Things’ Creators The Duffer Brothers Revealed Every Movie Referenced In The Series

Duffer Brothers Reveal Every Movie Stranger Things Referenced

Netflix

Anyone paying even half attention to detail while watching the first three seasons of Stranger Things has noticed that there are tons of references made throughout the series to classic movies from around the show’s timeframe.

The series began its first season in November of 1983 and has continued on through July of 1985, so as any 80s kid knows there were a lot of classic films The Duffer Brothers had to choose from when slipping in the occasional movie Easter egg from the era (plus a few from outside of it).

In fact, Ross and Matt Duffer have jammed so many references into the show only the most diehard viewers of the series would ever be able to spot them all.

Thankfully, Wired recently asked them to list all of the films they’ve referenced in Stranger Things’ first three seasons.

So… how many did you catch?

I guess Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Back to the Future were too obvious to actually be counted as Easter eggs.

For those of you scoring at home (and if you are, congrats), here are all of the movie references the Duffers discussed.

Alien (1979)
Aliens (1986)
Altered States (1980)
Carrie (1976)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977)
Cujo (1983)
E.T. (1982)
Escape from New York (1981)
Firestarter (1984)
Frankenstein (1931)
Ghostbusters (1984)
Gremlins (1984)
Indiana Jones (all of them)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
It (1990)
Jaws (1975)
John Hughes’ filmography
Jurassic Park (1993)
Mad Max (1979)
Risky Business (1983)
Scanners (1981)
Stand By Me (1986)
Star Wars: Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Super 8 (2011)
The Evil Dead (1981)
The Exorcist (1973)
The Thing (1982)

I so cannot wait for season four when Eleven causes the Chernobyl distaster.
