Ellen DeGeneres’ new, and allegedly final, stand-up “comedy” special hit Netflix this week, and the reaction to it has been largely predictable: bemused if not outright disgusted.

Two of the clips that have been going viral on social media highlight the absurd self-seriousness of Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approvalwhich obviously addresses her fall from grace, as she went from beloved to disgraced daytime TV host following allegations of mistreatment and workplace abuse.

The first clip shows the beginning of the special, which sees DeGeneres dramatically walking on stage as reports of her demise echo around her. It’s laughable, but not in the way you’d want your stand-up special to be, which is funny.

The second viral clip — which features a sarcastic caption — highlights “one of the best stand-up comedy bits” in years, which is just Ellen saying “I’m a strong woman” to a minute-straight of applause.

“For the first time in six years, Ellen DeGeneres returns to the stage in her new comedy special Ellen Degeneres: For Your Approval. The final comedy special of her historic career, Ellen gets personal and reveals what she’s been doing since being ‘kicked out of show business,’” Netflix said of the special when announcing it.

“From the mundane world of raising chickens and parallel parking to the harsh reality of becoming a brand-name celebrity, she goes deep into her stand-up roots and brings laughs through life’s most real and absurd realities.”

The Ellen DeGeneres Show aired on NBC for 19 seasons from 2003 to 2022 before coming off the air in May 2022 following allegations of on-set racism, sexual misconduct (against producers of the show, not Ellen herself), and intimidation.

Ellen DeGeneres: For Your Approval, in addition to her 2018 special Ellen DeGeneres: Relatable, is now streaming on Netflix.
