Elon Musk Has Absolutely Butchered The DMs Feature On ‘X’ And Users Are Furious

X DMs

Since paying approximately $44 billion to acquire Twitter and change it to X in 2022, Elon Musk has repeatedly come under fire for the changes he and his staff have made to the social media website.

While it has since recovered, at one point, the value of the site had dropped to an estimated $9 billion, and earlier this year, over 2.8 billion X users had their data stolen and leaked.

The latest changes to the site, however, seem to be the most controversial.

X Rolls Out New Encrypted DM Feature With Major Changes

On Thursday morning, X completely revamped its direct message/chat feature.

The new version of the feature includes end-to-end encryption, which is supposedly the largest selling point, but feels wildly unnecessary. In order to do so, users are required to make a passcode for their DMs.

In addition to the passcode, the changes include several negatives that X users seem furious about

  • Users can no longer edit messages
  • New members cannot be added to group chats unless a new encrypted chat is made
  • Voice notes no longer exist
  • Shared tweets and media now take up the overwhelming majority of the screen
  • Group chat names cannot be changed

But hey, on the bright side, users can now add multiple reactions to a single message! So you can express your anger with several emojis rather than just one at a time!

Unsurprisingly, X users were not happy about the changes, which nobody seemed to ask for.

“This new DM interface is horrible,” one person wrote. “If you DM me and I don’t respond, don’t take it personal. I have no f—ing idea how to use any of this anymore.”

“Elon ruining DMs is genuinely hilarious. I hate him so much,” wrote another.

A third asked Musk to change things back, writing, “Elon i am speaking for everyone on twitter, change back the DMs we didn’t ask for this.”

Ultimately, any of us still on the site are probably staying there for the foreseeable future and going down switch the ship. But it is impressive how quickly the site has become so, so much worse.
