Woman Spots A Florida Beach Proposal. Then She Looks Over, Sees What Her Boyfriend Is Doing

It’s safe to assume that TikToker Kenzie Ross (@kenzieross) has a good sense of humor. Otherwise, why would she post a short video of a recent Florida beach trip where there’s romance, artistry, and heartbreak in it?

OK. That might be a bit of an exaggeration.

What’s actually happening in the video, which has garnered 4.3 million views at the time of writing, is an elaborate setup. On the beach, two workers are setting up a red carpet lined with candles that leads to a red rose-covered heart-shaped arch. On either side of the arch are more roses and tall candelabra. It’s a set piece for the perfect proposal.

A Shrek Masterpiece

Then Ross pans the camera around so the audience can see her boyfriend’s activities. The text overlay of her video reads, “Someone is about to get proposed to as I watch my boyfriend of 8 years make Shrek out of sand.”

Honestly? She’s not misrepresenting his artistic endeavor. He is, in fact, down on his hands and knees, patting the sand into place around the portrait of a character most famous for farts, burps, and championing inner beauty.

“I can’t take this anymore,” she deadpans in the caption of her video.

Notably, Ross has disabled the comments. Maybe that’s because she doesn’t want to deal with a flood of users throwing Shrek’s own words back at her—like, “This is the part where you run away.”

She might not want to see folks urging her to dump her boyfriend or offering up opinions on how long she should wait for him to propose.

How Long Should You Wait For Your Boyfriend To Propose?

It seems that every friend group has that one couple who’s been together forever but isn’t actually married. And though no one comes right out and asks, “what’s up?” That’s probably a question that’s been bandied about behind their backs once or twice.

On average, couples in America date for about two and a half years before getting engaged. However, research suggests that those couples who choose to date for longer than the average have a better chance. The more you know, right?

Plus, an Emory University survey reports that couples who wait longer decrease the likelihood of divorce by 50%. So maybe Ross’ boyfriend is on to something.

OK, but what if you’re crazy in love? That’s the “Honeymoon Phase,” and it typically lasts about three months. That’s when everyone is putting their best foot forward. Chances are that you haven’t gone through something traumatic and hard or even traveled together. So you don’t have an idea how your new person reacts under stress (like when their pocket gets picked in Budapest).

There’s also the issue of things like core values, maturity, and trust. You can feel deeply connected to someone, and they can still be totally wrong for you.

When do you know it is the right time? Feelings, feelings, feelings. Because as The Knot notes, “There’s a lot of trial and error involved.” Sometimes, one partner just isn’t ready. That requires really honest communication—with yourself and your other half.

Here’s hoping whatever the future holds for Ross and her boyfriend, it ends like Shrek. Happy, and maybe some baby donkeys, too.
