Despite now being in his mid-80s, iconic Alien, Blade Runner, and Gladiator director Ridley Scott remains prolific as ever these days. This fall, he not only has two massive films coming out — The Last Duel and House of Gucci — but he’s beginning to ramp up production on another, Kitbag, in the coming months. And after that, says Scott, comes the long-in-the-works sequel to Gladiator, a follow-up to perhaps the definitive work of his legendary career.
“I’m already having [the next] Gladiator written now,” the 83-year-old director told Empire Magazine. “So when I’ve done Napoleon, Gladiator will be ready to go.”
Napoleon is a reference to Scott’s next film Kitbag, which is set to star Joaquin Phoenix as the infamous French Revolutionist and Killing Ever star Jodie Comer as Joséphine de Beauharnais.
Now, as for what a Gladiator sequel would potentially look like, there have been various tidbits of information to pop up throughout the years, although there’s no guarantee any of these details make their way into the final draft of the script, with Scott is currently working on.
According to IndieWire, “the first story details included the plot centering on Lucius, the son of Connie Nielsen’s character Lucilla and the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus, who is greatly influenced by Maximus.” It’s also been stated that the sequel would take place two decades after the original.
If we know anything about Scott, regardless of its ultimate quality, the sequel certainly won’t be some half-assed straight-to-streaming project, as he, still, only makes big movies.
The Last Duel, which stars Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, and Ben Affleck, hits theaters on October 15. House of Gucci, which also stars Driver alongside Lady Gaga, Al Pacino, Jared Leto, and Jeremy Irons, will release on November 24.
