A South Carolina beverage cart worker pulled up to two golfers on the course early in the morning. They tried to order a cocktail, but she informed them she can’t serve liquor until later. They tipped her generously anyways, sparking debate about the beverage rule.
In a video with over 3.4 million views, beverage cart girl Ashley (@cartgirlashley) greets the two men and asks for their orders. The first man tries to order a cocktail.
“I cannot sell any liquor until 10 o’clock,” she informs him. “I have beers and seltzers though.”
The man seems slightly annoyed that his original request was rejected but says “gimme a seltzer.”
The seltzer costs $5, but he hands her a $20 and says keep the change.
The second man also tries to order liquor, requesting a Screwdriver. She tells him that she can’t make one until 10am, and he says he’ll “come back” later.
As the men walk away, Ashley turns to the camera and exclaims, “He just gave me a $15 tip!”
Why Can’t You Get Liquor Before 10am On The Golf Course?
Just like brick-and-mortar bars, golf course bar carts have to follow strict liquor sale laws set by the state. In South Carolina, liquor cannot be sold before 10am. Other states may begin liquor sales as early as 6am.
Many golfers complain that they’d like to be able to order their beverage of choice at the early morning tee time.
However, states like South Carolina may be loosening up their strict regulations. On Feb. 10, a state bill that would allow alcohol sales on Sundays, which were previously restricted, moved to the committee, per NBC Wyff 4.
Do Viewers Agree With The Golfers?
In the comments of Ashley’s video, viewers shared mixed opinions on the interaction. Many suggested that the man was rude after she informed him of the alcohol regulations she had to follow.
“Anybody who says ‘gimmie’ before ordering is major redflag,” one suggested.
Another wrote, “He was trying to bribe u if u couldn’t tell.”
“People who say ‘gimme’ will either leave you a huge tip or nothing there’s zero in between lmao,” a third added.
Others agreed with the frustrated golfers that the liquor laws should be more flexible at certain venues.
“Liquor laws at Golf courses and Airports shouldn’t exist because they are in their own pocket dimension where time doesnt work the same,” a commenter joked.
A second comments, “I can see a no alcohol before 10 rule but the fact you can get a Suncruiser that has vodka in it is so silly.”
“Such a weird law. you can get wasted on other liquor but not this other liquor,” a third remarks.
