‘Straight Out Of A Horror Movie’: Appalachian Woman Thinks She Hears Animals In The Basement. Then She Takes A Look

When you hear a strange sound in the middle of the night, you might think that it’s simply an animal or neighbor making noise.

However, some sounds defy explanation. For example, one man said he heard something fall onto his truck, only to be met with the face of a non-human creature. Another said they were startled when a Halloween decoration looked and sounded as though it moves on its own.

Now, another internet user has viewers spooked after showing something paranormal that she says occurred in her own basement.

What Happened In This Woman’s Basement?

In a video with over 16.6 million views, TikTok user @appalachiadecay shows herself walking down into a basement.

“Took this video to show my husband when he was at work when I was hearing what I thought were rats in our basement,” she writes in the text overlaying the video.

As the TikTok reaches the bottom of the steps, she shows a wooden door. There are banging and scratching sounds at the door.

After a second, the knob appears to turn, causing the TikToker to run.

The Woman Follows Up And Shows More Of Her Basement

In a follow-up video, the TikToker reveals the whole basement and what’s behind the door.

After opening the door, she reveals that it goes to steps that lead outside. However, the cellar doors above have been “sealed from the inside and the outside.”

She then closes the door before showing the rest of the basement, which seems normal.

“At this point, we’re kind of thinking it’s just raccoons. Maybe mouse, maybe rats,” she states.

As she does, she shows, but does not appear to notice, that the door has been opened again.

What’s Really Going On Here?

In the comments section, users had plenty of theories about what could cause the banging on the door.

“Porcupines…. Their spines sound horrific, trust me had them under the crawl space of my old house,” wrote a user. “Also when they mate it sounds like a baby being [killed]. Not joking.”

“Funny thing is, there’s a very good chance thats a raccoon,” offered another.

“Girl call a exterminator a priest and the fire department,” declared a third.

But are there other explanations that could be at play here?

Is This Woman’s House Haunted?

There are a few things that could explain the strange noises and doorknob movements.

The first ism as the TikToker stated, animals. While an area may seem completely sealed off, some animals have a way of getting through even the most compact spaces. Although it may be startling to see a doorknob suddenly move, it’s not particularly surprising, given that an animal can simply jump onto the knob and have the same effect.

The second option is that the video is fake. The TikToker’s entire account is devoted to paranormal and “haunted” imagery and experiences. It’s possible that this video was faked in order to meet that theme.

Videos like these can be faked fairly easily. In the original video, someone can go behind the door and make noises, then hit the handle at the appropriate time. Concerning the second video, someone off-camera could have simply opened the door when she was filming in other parts of the basement.

Of course, the third option is that she is documenting what some would refer to as a haunting. If that’s the case, she’s going to need a little more than an exterminator to get rid of the problem.
