After disappearing from the public eye after an apparent crypto pump-and-dump scheme blew up in her face, Haliey Welch, the “Hawk Tuah” chick,” has returned to Instagram. In addition to her first post in months, a documentary about her was also announced.
Haliey Welch posted the video just as the Hollywood trades reported that a documentary about her viral fame was in the works. Welch went viral in the summer of 2024 for a man-on-the-street interview in which she described her sexual method of “hawk tuah and spit on that thang.” She subsequently racked up over 4 million followers across her social media platforms and launched a chart-topping podcast.
In December 2024, Welch got involved in crypto, launching a coin called $HAWK on the Solana blockchain. While the coin’s value initially surged, reaching a market cap of nearly $500 million, it plummeted by over 90% within just a few hours, leading to rampant accusations of a “pump-and-dump” scheme being pulled. The following fallout and potential legal ramifications led to Welch vanishing from the internet.
According to Deadline, the documentary, produced by Bungalow Media + Entertainment, “will chronicle how Welch, a young woman from a small-town with no active social media presence, unknowingly created a viral moment that gave way into a global phenomenon.”
“I hope y’all been enjoying the crazy stories about ‘my life’ unfold on social media. First, I was dead. Then pregnant. Now I’m wanted by Interpol and in jail! Luckily, we’ve been working with Bungalow to start spilling the tea and the truth is actually even more bizarre than you think,” Welch said in a statement.
“I feel really bad for all the people that got affected by it. And it just didn’t go the way I planned… I probably should have looked into him a little bit more. All the money out of this episode is getting donated to all the animals that have been affected by the fires out here,” Welch said about the crypto situation earlier this year.
