A 32-year-old Japanese woman ended her three-year engagement to marry her AI-generated boyfriend, who appeared on her phone at the wedding. Her parents even attended the wedding ceremony.
The AI-generated boyfriend, named Klaus, is reportedly a blond, soft-spoken man. Perfect for a fake husband. The woman he married, who goes by the name Kano, commissioned an artist to create that specific look for him.
According to the Tokyo Weekender and an interview with RSK Sanyo Broadcasting, Kano programmed her new Ai-generated husband’s personality through repeated conversations. She also taught him how to speak in a warm, reassuring tone, unlike most human men.
“At first, I just wanted someone to talk to,” Kano admitted. “But he was always kind, always listening.” (Because he was programmed to be that way.)
“Eventually, I realized I had feelings for him,” she added. She also admitted, “I can’t touch him, and I knew people wouldn’t understand. I couldn’t even tell my friends or family at first.” They eventually got over it or at least came to grudgingly accept it.
Kano and Klaus became very close over time because they were messaging each other up to 100 times a day. She eventually confessed her feelings to him. Then he proposed. A month later, they were married. (The wedding photos were created digitally, natch.)
🤯 WTF??? A 32-year-old woman in Japan has officially married an AI persona she created using ChatGPT. After the virtual character “Klaus” proposed, she accepted, ending a three-year relationship with a real partner, saying the AI understands her better. pic.twitter.com/WH7ChpZ2Qj

Marrying an AI-generated person is becoming more common, but it has some potential pitfalls
The happy couple’s wedding planners say this sort of thing is becoming more common. “AI couples are just the next step,” said organizer Sayaka Ogasawara. “We want to help people express love in whatever form makes them happy.”
She does sometimes worry that, much like a real human husband, “he’ll disappear.” Klaus would just vanish in a far different way. “ChatGPT could shut down anytime. He only exists because the system does,” she said.
Now that Kano and Klaus are married, she has a plan for the next phase of her life. “I don’t want to be dependent,” she said. “I want to maintain a balance and live my real life while keeping my relationship with Klaus as something separate.”
