With the brain power of the collective public generally leaking out of our ears, an appearance from comedic icon Jim Carrey at a French award show last week sparked speculation that he’d been replaced by a clone. Carrey was in France to accept an Honorary César Award.

On February 26, Jim Carrey was presented with an Honorary César Award (César d’honneur) at the 51st César Awards in Paris, which is essentially the French equivalent of the Oscar’s lifetime achievement award.

Carrey’s bloated face not only sparked concern, however, but full blown conspiracy theories that he’d been “replaced by a clone.” The conspiracy conversation got so loud, in fact, that the César Awards released a statement denying it.

The César Awards released a statement about Jim Carrey’s appearance after mass speculation on social media that the actor was “replaced by a clone”

“Jim Carrey’s visit has been planned since this summer. From the outset, he was extremely touched by the Academy’s invitation. Eight months of ongoing, constructive discussions,” Gregory Caulier, the general delegate of the Cesar Awards, told Variety.

“He worked on his speech in French for months, asking me about the exact pronunciation of certain words. He came with his partner, his daughter, his grandson and 12 close friends and family members. His longtime publicist accompanied him. His old friend Michel Gondry, who has made a film and two series with him, was there, and they were delighted to see each other again,”

As noted in the Cesar Award’s statement, Carrey has such a bond with French cinema due to his relationship with filmmaker Michel Gondry, who directed Carrey in the 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which is widely considered to be one of the best movies of the 21st century.
