This morning, the 2020 Golden Globe Nominations were announced, and while the Golden Globes have never necessarily been an accurate predictor of Academy Awards success, seeing which actors, actresses, and projects begin to get awards season recognition is certainly interesting.
And of all the 2020 Golden Globe nominations, the one that has us the most excited is Joaquin Phoenix nabbing a nomination for Best Actor in a Drama.
For my money, the race for Best Actor at the Academy Awards is down to two people: Phoenix in Joker and Adam Driver in Marriage Story. And folks, let me tell ya, Driver is fucking incredible in Marriage Story, so Phoenix certainly has his work cut out for him. In addition to Phoenix and Driver, Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory), Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari), and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) were nominated for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama.
Conversely, Cynthia Erivo (Harriet) Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story), Saoirse Ronan (Little Women), Charlize Theron (Bombshell), and Renée Zellweger (Judy) were nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama.
In addition to a Best Actor nomination for Phoenix, Joker also scored nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Motion Picture Score.
In the Best Picture – Drama category, 1917, The Irishman, Joker, Marriage Story, and The Two Popes were nominated. In the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Dolemite Is My Name, Jojo Rabbit, Knives Out, Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood, and Rocketman scored nominated.
The 77th Golden Globe Awards will be held at The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles, California, on Sunday, January 5, 2020.
