The ‘Avengers: Endgame’ Directors Are Developing A Superhero Movie With Keanu Reeves

Over the last couple of years, it can be argued that no one in Hollywood has made a bigger comeback than Keanu Reeves.

Following the final installment of The Matrix franchise in 2005, Reeves basically roamed the entertainment industry wilderness, starring in random, not-very-good midbudget films such as Constantine, A Scanner Darkly, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Street Kings, The Lakehouse, and 47 Ronin.

But then, seemingly out of nowhere in 2014, Reeves became the face of the instantly successful John Wick franchise which unexpectedly flipped his career on his head and planted him firmly back in the public’s attention. Now, with Point Break, Speed, The Matrix franchise, and the John Wick franchise under his belt, some argue that Reeves is the greatest action star of the last 30 years. Quite the turnaround considering he starred in a film called Generation Um… back in 2013.

These days, Reeves is a certified A-lister, as he’s in-demand all across Hollywood, including by the directors of Avengers: Endgame.

In an interview with Inverse, Joe and Anthony Russo — the directors of Avengers: Endgame — revealed that they are currently in the “formative stages” of developing a superhero film called Past Midnight, which currently has Keanu Reeves set to star.

Inverse: You’re producing a lot of movies now, but one of the most intriguing is Past Midnight, which is a superhero movie starring Keanu Reeves. Can you tell me anything about that?*

Joe Russo: Past Midnight’s still in a very formative stage. So it’s probably not best to talk about it yet, but it is a fascinating script. [via Inverse]

Keanu Reeves is a hot commodity in the entertainment industry, as Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige revealed earlier this year that the studio has been trying to cast the former The Matrix star in one of their films for years.

“We talk to him for almost every film we make. I don’t know when, if, or ever he’ll join the MCU, but we very much want to figure out the right way to do it,” Feige said earlier this summer.

At this point, it’s not a matter of if, but a matter of when Reeves adds a major superhero role to his filmography (Constantine doesn’t count even though it is one of my favorite “so bad it’s good” movies of all-time).
