When your steak arrives with a pool of mysterious white liquid and a name like “love butter,” you’re gonna have questions.
And we’re not sure there’s any amount of explaining in the world that would get a person to eat this meal after getting a nasty image stuck in their head.
Is This White Sauce What You Think It Is?
In a viral video with more than 2.6 million views, content creator Jarret Trone (@big_muvaamusic89) captured his friend’s reaction to a suspicious-looking Longhorn Steakhouse order.
In the video, you can see the steak came covered in a cloudy white sauce pooling on top and dripping down onto the plate. The restaurant called it “love butter.” But to the duo it looked like… well, something else entirely.
“A Longhorn, I don’t know what the f— y’all got going on, but they sent this out to my friend talking about this with some love butter,” Trone says in the video. “But I don’t know about it.”
He’s not wrong to be skeptical. The name alone raises questions.
“And the name love—love butter—is kinda gross,” he adds.
In the video, his friend tests the sauce’s consistency with their finger. It’s not sticky; it’s watery. But that doesn’t make it any less suspicious-looking.
What Actually Is ‘Love Butter’?
Turns out, there’s a reasonable explanation, though the restaurant could’ve gone with a different name.
Several commenters who claimed to be former Longhorn employees chimed in to clarify: It’s just lemon butter basting sauce.
Other Longhorn Butter Hacks You Should Know
If you’re curious about what else you can do with butter at Longhorn, a former employee who worked there for nearly a decade shared some insider knowledge with Tasting Table.
Want to make that complimentary bread even better? Ask your server for cinnamon sugar butter. Servers have access to cinnamon sugar mix (used for sweet potatoes), and they can sprinkle some into a ramekin with butter. Mix it yourself at the table, and boom, you’ve got a sweet-and-savory combo that pairs perfectly with Longhorn’s honey wheat bread.
The ex-employee also confirmed that Longhorn goes hard on butter-based sauces in general. That famous parmesan crust topping everyone loves is made with homemade ranch dressing, grated parmesan, garlic, herbs, panko breadcrumbs, and more cheese. And customers have successfully requested it on everything from salmon to steak tips to mashed potatoes.
