Check out the official announcement video and synopsis for the film below.

“14 years after the passing of Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin set out to retrace the first steps of their adventure. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, has discovered a long-buried secret and is determined to uncover why the War of the Ring was very nearly lost before it even began.”

Movie fans, however, are far from celebrating the announcement, with many tweets denouncing the project going viral.

“I had to double check if this was a joke because that sounds like the dumbest s— I have ever heard,” read one viral response from a fan.

“This is going to make Rings of Power look like Battleship Potemkin,” a second joked.

“I knew Hollywood is really bankrupt and desperate but not ‘Stephen Colbert making LOTR: The Force Awakens’ bankrupt and desperate,” a third summarized.

Currently, an additional Lord of the Rings sequel titled The Hunt For Gollum is being directed by Gollum actor Andy Serkis and is set to hit movie theaters in 2027.
