Actor Macaulay Culkin, who starred alongside Catherine O’Hara in the iconic family holiday comedy Home Alone when he was a young boy, has shared a heartbreaking tribute to the late actress following the news of her death at 71 years old. O’Hara’s passing — which came after a “short illness” — was reported on Friday, January 30.
While Home Alone was released in 1990, the pair remained connected given the film’s legacy and close given their evidently formative experience together, as Catherine O’Hara famously honored Macaulay Culkin at his Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in December 203 and delivered a touching speech in which she called herself his “fake mom.”
The pair also reprised their roles as Kevin and Kate McCallister, respectively, in the 1992 sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.

In his statement about her passing, Culkin called O’Hara “mama,” suggesting the pair’s bond really was that close.
“Mama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you but I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later,” Culkin captioned the pair of photos from Home Alone and the aforementioned Walk of Fame ceremony.
O’hara, one of the most iconic Canadian comedians of all-time, famously got her start on the Canadian sketch comedy TV series SCTV alongside the likes of John Candy, Eugene Levy, Andrea Marin, Rick Moranis, Harold Ramis, Martin Short, and more.
She had plenty of success in recent years, too, thanks to her starring roles in the Emmy Award-winning comedies Schitt’s Creek and, more recently, The Studio. She also recently appeared in Beetlejuice 2, a sequel to her hit 1988 Tim Burton film.
Our thoughts are with O’Hara’s family, friends, fans, and various loved ones during this difficult time. May she rest in peace.
