A California man facing car theft charges arrived at court in a different stolen car, according to the Monterey County Sheriff. The man was arrested on Tuesday after arriving at the Monterey County courthouse.

According to the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office, the 41-year-old male pulled into the Salinas, California, courthouse parking lot, driving a vehicle reported stolen in San Jose.

Members of the Multi-Agency Detail Combating Auto Theft (MADCAT) arrested him after observing him arrive in the stolen vehicle.

Deputies snagged the man outside the courtroom where he was scheduled to appear for a pending car theft case. He never did make it to his scheduled appearance before a judge.

Instead, he was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Monterey County Jail. The Sheriff’s Office charged him with unlawful driving or taking of a vehicle, commission of a felony while released on bail/own recognizance, and driving with a suspended license. According to jail records, his bail was set at $35,000.

The bizarre incident led to numerous comments on social media

So far, readers of the Monterey County Sheriff’s Office’s post about the unusual arrest have left over 520 comments.

Do you want him at court or not?” one person joked.

“The irony is strong with this one,” another commenter wrote.

“Hey, at least he made it to court,” read another comment.

Go big or go home. And he’s definitely not going home,” someone else joked.

“Sometimes the fish jump right into the boat,” commented another reader.
