Margot Robbie looks to be lining up her next big project, as reports indicate that the 35-year-old A-list actress is in talks to star in the remake of American Psycho.

According to a report from The Sun, the Oscar-nominated Margot Robbie is in “advanced discussions” to star in the upcoming American Psycho remake, which is set to be directed by Call Me By Your Name and Challengers director Luca Guadaningo.

Robbie starring in a gender-swapped remake of American Psycho makes sense on a multitude of fronts.

Here’s why Margot Robbie would be the perfect choice to star in a gender-swapped remake of American Psycho

First, and most obviously, is her universally agreed on beauty, which is the perfect fit for a character that’s obsessed with physical perfection. The second is that she’s one of the most gifted, and popular, actors in the world — male or female.

Finally, however, is the fact that — unlike some egregious comic book gender/race-swapped roles, there is nothing about the American Psycho story that requires the main character to be a white male, particularly in 2025.

At the turn of the century, a Christian Bale-type playing a booming 1980s investment banker made sense for the time and the place. But if Luca Guadaningo’s version is going to be set in the modern day, there’s no reason that a woman — particularly one that looks like Robbie — wouldn’t be in the sort of business position of power that the story revolves around.

In fact, gender swapping the role gives the remake its entire reason to exist, as simply rehashing the 2000 film would be a pointless effort as it would undoubtedly fail to live up to the heights of its predecessor, so why bother? By changing the lead character, you change the perspective and then give the artists the chance to tell a new story.

Robbie most recently starred in the mildly-received A Big Bold Beautiful Journey alongside Colin Farrell, and will next feature alongside Jacob Elordi in Emerald Fennell’s Wuthering Heights, which releases on February 13.
