Matthew McConaughey Sparks ‘True Detective’ Rumors With Sly Social Media Post

HBO

Academy Award winning actor Matthew McConaughey has set the internet on fire with speculation surrounding a new season of True Detective after posting a photo alongside co-star Woody Harrelson and creator Nic Pizzolatto on Instagram.

Released in January 2014, the first season of True Detective instantly became an iconic entry in the “golden age of television,” as it served as a proof-of-concept that traditional movie stars could star in a prestige TV show.

While subsequent seasons have been far more mixed, the original eight episodes of True Detective remain beloved by television fans, with many citing it as being one of the greatest seasons of TV ever made.

Given its widespread reverence, Matthew McConaughey certainly knew exactly what he was doing when sharing a photo of himself alongside Harrelson and Pizzolatto on IG.

“Oh man, you gotta know the rumors you just started,” Pizzolatto commented on the post.

Back in May 2025, Pizzolatto said he had an idea for a new story centered on McConaughey’s Rust Cohle and Woody Harrelson’s Marty Hart, and added that he thinks the iconic acting duo would be “open to it.”

“I actually have another story for Cohle and Hart that — who knows? — maybe we’ll do it one day,” Pizzolatto said on the Nothing Left Unsaid podcast

“It’s character-based again. … But it’s not something I’ve written or anything. It’s just, I had that in my head. And we’ve talked about getting back together and doing it, and I think the guys are open to it. It’s just a question of whether that would ever happen or not.”

According to reports from last year, a fifth season of True Detective is in the works at HBO and is set to be located in Jamaica Bay, New York and star Oscar-winner Nicolas Cage.
