Two Mexican Navy patrol vessels recently found two tons of cocaine in waterproof wrapping just floating in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

A video released by Mexico’s Navy (SEMAR) shows large packages drifting in calm seas. Navy troops, who masked their faces, collected the cocaine and then displayed it on the ship’s deck.

This action was a part of the Mexican Navy’s maritime surveillance operations, which has had a major influence on the financial systems of criminal organizations by impeding their activities.

They discovered the narcotics more than 200 nautical miles (about 230 miles) south-southwest of the coast of Acapulco. Naval personnel used intelligence and deployed aircraft, an ocean patrol vessel, and a small boat to locate and seize the packages containing the narcotics whose estimated weight was nearly two tons. There were no recorded arrests.

The Mexican Navy has made multiple large drug seizures recently

The maritime operation was led by elements of the Navy (SEMAR). The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) and the Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC) assisted, SEMAR said in a statement.

“I commend (Mexico) for the seizure of 2 tons of cocaine off the coast of Guerrero (state). Actions like these add to the more than 60 tons of drugs already seized at sea by Mexican authorities,” U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Ronald Johnson wrote on X. “These efforts help protect the health and security of our two nations and show what we can achieve when we cooperate and share information.”

Last month, the Mexican Navy intercepted a “narco-submarine” with over 4.4 tons of cocaine on the Pacific coast of Mexico.

Mexican Secretary of Security Omar Garcia Harfuch called the interception a “direct and multi-million-dollar blow to the financial structures of organized crime, preventing millions of doses from reaching the streets and protecting the safety of Mexican families.”
