Airport food is the worst of all culinary worlds: It’s expensive, cooked in a hurry, often bad for you, and never as tasty as you want it to be.
But in general, it’s edible. That means you can satisfy the hunger that arrives when you’re 30,000 feet in the air that Biscoff cookies or pretzels can’t touch. However, one hungry traveler was served an absolute horror story at a Chili’s restaurant in the Miami airport.
Golden Brown On The Outside, Pink On The Inside
In a 5-second TikTok that’s been watched 1.5 million times, Agu (@sivartdaehetihw) poses a question for the ages—or at least for any health inspector watching. “Brother, how am I supposed to eat this?” he says. Then the camera cuts from his distressed face to the chicken tender he was just served.
Except, it’s more like a chicken not so tender. Because though it looks cooked on the outside, it’s completely raw on the inside. Not undercooked. Not slightly pink, but so untouched by heat that it looks cold.
‘Nightmare Situation’
So many viewers are shouting about lawsuits that another, more immediate potential problem almost gets lost in the sauce.
“That’s alarming. Not only potential serious food poisoning, but being sick on a flight? A nightmare situation,” pointed out one viewer.
Then, another person chimed in with their own Chili’s airport warning: “I had chilis at the chicago airport during a layover and i was s—— my brains out when i got to my destination.”
While user @smokinghotmessexpress voices what many of us have got to be thinking: “I just got food poisoning looking at it.”
Is It The Food, Or Is It Travel?
There’s really no debating that this pile of chicken tenders never should have made it out of the kitchen. But the commenters do raise a common enough companion issue: travel tummy. According to Harvard Medical School, traveler’s tummy is an actual thing and involves “problems like diarrhea, constipation, and indigestion are [often] travel companions.”
So, aside from avoiding dodgy meat, how do you avoid letting an upset stomach upset your trip? Clean water, clean hands, and fiber come to the rescue. If you’ve got an already sensitive interior, frequent travelers suggest avoiding foods that can trigger an event (especially if you’re lactose intolerant and traveling by rail through Eastern Europe). And finally, focus on smaller, more frequent meals until you’re settled into your destination. No matter how amazing the crêpes are.
Additionally, prepare a kit of over-the-counter remedies. Think Tums, Pepto-Bismol, Colace, and Metamucil. Not because you can’t find help abroad, but because no one wants to go racing through the cobblestone streets of Grenoble looking for la pharmacie at midnight.
As for the question that Agu posted in the video: “How am I supposed to eat this?” The answer is, you’re not. Listen to the folks in the comments who are telling you to get a refund. They’ve got your back.
